Partnering for International Literacy Learning (PILL) at Florida Memorial University

THE PROJECT

Partnerships in teacher education programs are becoming increasingly popular in the United States as these programs strive to prepare teachers to become more effective in classrooms.

As the only historically black university in the region of South Florida, Florida Memorial University has a commitment not only to apply the expertise at the University to community interests and problems, but to reach out to our students’ homelands abroad; consequently, the Literacy Enrichment Center at Florida Memorial University has developed an outreach effort focused on literacy as a natural extension of existing interests.

The effort “Partnering for International Literacy Learning (PILL)” is a multifaceted model designed to strengthen our teacher education program with embedded instruction in literacy, which focuses on culturally-sensitive instruction through partnerships from an international stance—an effort we hope will empower our future teachers to connect more effectively with all students.
